The BARBET is a rare French breed of gundog which is sometimes known as the French Water Dog. There are about 1400 worldwide and fewer than 30 in

the U.K. ( in June 2011) The Barbet has a long and ancient pedigree and should certainly never be confused with the Labradoodle! At present in the U.K. this breed is not recognised by the Kennel Club so is unable to participate in the Show ring or K.C. Gundog events. The breed may, of course, be registered on the K.C Activity register and so take part in competitive activities such as Agility or Working Trials. The Barbet is in F.C.I Group 8 and can, of course be shown in any F.C.I. country; several British Barbets have already made the trip across the Channel to their native France where they have been very successful in the show ring.

This site is devoted mainly to prospective owners, or owners, who would like to train their dogs to the gun, but there is much to attract anyone with an interest in the breed. Some information is UK-related, but there is a lot that is valid in all countries!
